Open Standards
Email is a great success. By using standard protocols, and connected in a standard way to a huge network, we are able to transfer information all over the world between organizations and computer systems that are very different in culture, location, and size. The Internet email system is based on simple, standard protocols. Email is a great model for developing further protocols for communication.

The one primary problem preventing communication of the basic business documents today is lack of a standard format for electronic data. Some standards, such as XML are being developed which may aid in developing some standard for transfer of invoices, but currently no specific standard has been implemented across a wide range of systems for basic business documents. I believe there needs to be an initiative to develop standard business document formats, based on XML. There should be standards for Invoices, Statements, and Orders etc.

Several projects are currently developing such standards, and it is my intension to follow and implement the standards as far as practical. There is a list of other B2B XML standards projects on my B2B Resources Page.
